Nature and dewdrops

- Youngsoo LEE

* 작가 노트:

Something that stirs our emotions…

It is perhaps the immutable nature…

This is a reason why I love it.

From the ancient times to the present it has been

a symbol for artistic subjects,

and what is portrayed both directly and indirectly

is perhaps nature…

Dewdrops on a leaf in the early morning…

Green leaves embracing the dew drops after a rainfall,

makes me feel the cleanliness, freshness and the pure world…

The moments during sunshine when dewdrops emerge…

The shining dewdrops make my heart palpitate…

The flowers exert colors dull and bright,

And when its colors approach untouched

Their image is embodied in drawing…

Same leaves appear differently depending on the time (or light)

The diverse ways in which they appear to me (nature puts on a different color)

Is perhaps the reason why I continue to hold my brush…

The times when nature comes in disparate forms

I depict my emotions in my own way and feelings,

And draw another nature.

I am blessed and delighted at what I can do,

But I am at times confronted with loneliness…

- Excerpts from Artist’s Notes

The world my paintings aim for is absolute aesthetics. Thus, my paintings are rich in aesthetic elements. They also focus on the beauty of the moment. Dewdrops and ginkgo leaves were chosen as aesthetic materials.

Just looking at water drops and dewdrops gives you a sense of purity, elegance, and brilliance. Tiny dewdrops reflect sunlight and shine like jewels, capturing everything around them like a mirror. That's why dewdrops are called microcosms. Even just for the moment of appreciating the paintings, the painter hopes everyone gives up the greed that has settled in their hearts and feels a small sense of purity and innocence, in order to purify a society that has become turbid.

The yellow ginkgo leaves symbolizing autumn are beautiful to look at, but they are also said to give humans longevity, majesty, luck, and wealth. The painter expressed a lucky ginkgo leaf with pure gold, titled “wealth”.

I usually draw waterdrops or dewdrops of morning and I want to contain the world or surrounding that are reflected in those drops.

So people who see my paintings have told me that the drops I draw are the small universe because the reflection of the whole world is in them.
